Thread: Can running e2fsck on live system cause errors?
we have old server running, , decided run fsck.ext3 -n on disk check (while running). turns out reports lots of errors - not thing.
weird thing when booting rescue cd , running fsck.ext3 on it, says there no problems it. filesystem marked clean. forcing check -f turns nothing.
now, when booting disk, fsck complains unclean file system has not been checked 50000 days (obviously error). running e2fsck -n /dev/sda2 turns errors again - not same ones last time.
makes me wonder:
- can running e2fsck on mounted file system cause errors? ran -n not supposed anything, doing read-only check. on other hand, heard checking live file system might throw erros since files being checked might change while bign checked, causing false positives.
- can old version of e2fstools (1.38, approx 2005) mean non-existing errors shown? both rescue cd , system use version.
- in case - why file system report errors on boot-up when rescue cd said ok? should have been marked clean now.
laughs, shut down system , booted knoppix has quite recent version (1.41.12, may 2010) of e2fstools. showed no errors on file system.
think - there errors or not on file system? driving me nuts!
(p.s. system running suse, not suse specific things - general linux tools. , use ubuntu)
running -n can not cause errors, on mounted filesystem, can report errors not there.
sounds system has broken real time clock, doesn't know time when first booting up, gets correct time network. explain why complains not being checked in 50000 days.
