Thread: grub error 17, fdisk doesn't show partition i need to fix device.map
hello,
tried installing ubuntu 11.04 on system had ubuntu 10.10 + windows xp dual boot. exisiting setup 2 drives (which i'll call small , big), small being master , having 2 partitions, 1 linux , for xp. grub boot loader.
chose "erase previous ubuntu" install option. installation failed due unknown error (but think think small might failing). when boot, grub error 17.
ubuntu forum thread seemed (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=442945), in particular mbwardle's answer (http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...11&postcount=9).
booted using install cd. determine partition should listed first in device.map, ran 'fdisk -l'. listed big /dev/sda , small /dev/sdb. however, showed 1 partition /dev/sdb, /dev/sdb1, , ntfs partition. can't see ext3 (or whatever used when installed ubuntu 9 long time ago , upgraded way 10), can't mount need in order change (or check device.map.
idea wrong @ stage? ubuntu installation erased partition , failed before recreating partition? simpler, i'm doing wrong?
[edit] here output of 'fdisk -l':
/dev/sdb drive should boot from, , supposed contain 2 partitions, , 1 need not listed...
