Thread: How to install without modifying MBR?
when installed ubuntu on hd existing os placed grub in mbr without asking. maybe there option missed? how tell installer confine install partition , leave mbr alone? (i'll use system bios select boot partition).
hi. question.
there few answers can give you,
1) latest ubuntu installer remiss not making explicitly choose grub boot code put, except if choose "something else"/"advanced". there pull-down menu can choose among partitions.
2) grub boot system not work reliably when boot code put in partition in way ubuntu installer , grub-install it. creates dependency between boot code , absolute sector address of file in /boot. there circumstances when location of file may change.
3) because of 2) file, core.img, put in sectors 1 50 (approx) on disk won't move , boot code put in mbr in sector 0, wiping out standard boot code windows relies on. not mean boot code has in mbr. can in partition instead.
...confused yet?
4) agree ubuntu boot stuff should contained in ubuntu partition. not reliably supported ubuntu. can achieve compromise installing normal mbr area , moving sector 0 boot code start of primary partition, restore standard boot code , set boot flag partition. avoid windows mbr conflict issues.
5) easier , reliable install grub mbr of separate disk. usb stick. grub mbr , boot file need not on same disk /boot partition.
