Thread: Sales Question - Wild Dog options
i apologize in advance length of post i'm trying comply requirements listed in "how request support or product information" sticky. sticky asks 3 pieces of info in these queries.
- first, model? i've decided order wild dog based on specs. however, i'm having little trouble deciding tick off options.
- second, used for? system used main desktop. in no particular order (really, quick brain dump) sort of stuff computer:
- i consume lots of media, typically downloading hundreds of thousands of files , file parts usenet monthly. on windows, means find myself opening folder, clicking "select all" , dragging group of files new location - find i've selected 20,000 files , machine useless while grinds away several minutes. linux boxes typically perform little better, though have option think ahead , such moves via command line things go quicker. still, nice have gui file management take stress without flaking out.
- all media files stored on separate 4-disk jbod box esata connector must while size of boot disk pretty meaningless.
- while consuming video , audio files, find myself trying play high-def files have caused prior linux boxes stutter or stop. need strong video playback although won't be, specifically, media center. happens located next tv. intend hook new, large hd flat screen (not yet purchased) machine in near future. i'll upgrading monitor 30" soon. candidate nec multisync pa301w, displaying @ 2560 x 1600 , connected via "2xdvi-d w/hdcp, 2xdisplayport 1.1a" video inputs, meaning i'll need card dual-link dvi output run - that's not problem, right?
- i've retired i'm start playing gimp, kino, , whatever can find in way of games. biggest emphasis on gimp; used photographer , i'll doing deal of photo work. making transparencies contact printing means working still image files of 100 megs or more.
- i have 4 linux boxes running , want combine them simplify clutter. end, new machine needs spec'd enough run 1 or 2 virtual machines of low power.
- third, questions. i'm trying sort out options. maxing processor , ram no-brainers have 2 areas i'm unsure.
- to begin with, video card choices have me confused. there's not in way of heavy-duty linux games require crazy 3d performance , of i've described above 2d. where's sweet spot? specifically, go through progression order page (bulleted below) gained each step? $250 jump gtx 580, example, isn't problem me buy me noticeable, real-world performance gain?
- 512 mb nvidia geforce gt210
- 1 gb nvidia geforce gt430 ( +$49.00 )
- 1 gb nvidia geforce gts 450 ( +$109.00 )
- 1 gb nvidia geforce gtx 460 ( +$219.00 )
- 1 gb nvidia geforce gtx 560 ti ( +$299.00 )
- 1536 mb nvidia geforce gtx 580 ( +$559.00 )
- also, have no experience sata iii drives. use whole-disk encryption , prefer in hardware, either via stonewood drives or inline encryptor. both options, however, limit me sata ii. alternatively, can encryption in software re-installing os via alternate install disk , preserve sata iii speeds. given file management propensities, worthwhile go 1 of sata iii drive options?
tia thoughts,
ben
