i hate nm-applet, keep fails, , doesnt recognize network well

have manually this: sudo ifconfig eth0 up
, manually connect: sudo pon dsl-provider
still cant connect vpn (after failing of nm, since manually connecting internet doesnt enable me connect via nm)
dont know how use command "pptp" , it's manual totally confusing (man pptp)
how nm it? command run? want myself
ps: know there many fixes nm-applet issues if solve problem pops out, so...
hi,
have work on machines have no nm-applet (for various reasons). interested in how creates vpn connection.
know stores properties each vpn connection in:
/home/<username>/.gconf/networking/connections
in here find connections numbering 1 upwards. in of these directories further vpn directory contains %gconf.xml. xml seems contain properties vpn connection.
how uses these properties files not know. have feeling using pon. have used pon myself have not found way use existing vpn properties files. following guide using pon maybe helpful you:
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-ubuntu.phtml
see section titled: "configuration, hand"
once set can use terminal create vpn connection.
