Thread: installing ubuntu alongside windows 7

i have bought laptop (sony s series) windows 7 , want install ubuntu on partitioned hard-drive, largely avoid getting viruses. use ubuntu personal use (internet, photos, music) , windows work (ms office). want keep 2 systems separate in order reduce risk of virus contamination

have downloaded installer onto usb drive , ready install. have 2 simple (i think) questions:

1. select "install ubuntu alongside windows" or "something else"? want partition hard-drive

2. how set partition? need 50gb windows docs

have looked @ lots of advice on internet of seems older versions of ubuntu. grateful can provide me clear, straightforward advice - have never partitioned hard-drive or installed new os , linux virgin

thanks

if haven't already, need use tool unetbootin add necessary boot files usb drive.

boot flash , select install ubuntu. follow instructions on screen , you'll find way need select hard drive install to.

use slider determine how space used ubuntu partition. otherwise use 'advanced partition tool' more options.
