Same Character, Same Animations, Different Colors

i have large project doing in flash cs4, involves creating simple characters. same, they're going colored differently , exported png images animation.

 

my problem this:

 

is there way create template character, animate it, go , recolor without disturbing animation? speed process long. thanks.

it not clear me how png fits in animation, if want change appearance of object animating, if create object graphic or movieclip symbol, , animate symbol, can edit symbol without impacting animation.
