Thread: rsync disk failure --delete

i have 2 data hard drives on linux server , use second backup first drive.
use rsync purpose. example be:
code:
rsync -r -v --delete /media/disk1/ /media/disk2/
what copies every file/directory /media/disk1/ /media/disk2/ deletes difference. example, lets files , b not file c on disk1, , on disk2 there no , b files, there c. result after command on disk2 i'd have files , b, file c deleted, on disk1.

now, rather disastrous scenario had crossed mind; if disk1 dies, system continues work since system files on system disk, when rsync tries backup data on disk2 broken disk1, deletes files disk2 because can't read on disk1.

rsync manual states:
"if sending side detects i/o errors, deletion of files @ destination automatically disabled. prevent temporary filesystem failures (such nfs errors) on sending side causing massive deletion of files on destination. can override --ignore-errors option."

protect me probable scenario? once had 2 disks in lvm, 1 died, system continued work, connect disk, part of data there, directory names there, although empty (and shouldn't have been)... rsync detect or lose data if lvm disk disk backing up? "--delete" delete files backup disk in case?

would raid1 work better you?
