Thread: Alternative for Prism
when upgraded ubuntu 11.04 forced removal of "prism" had been using make local executables of on-line web applications. during synaptic based upgrade latest firefox lost add-on allowed firefox make locally executable applications on-line web urls.
not wanting back-port prism, , not wanting go older version of firefox decided see of there other way make web-based applications become click-able applications via local menu.
turns out easy. using browser, go desired web based application page , copy it's url highlighting url , hitting ctrl-c. open menu editor @ /system/preferences/main_menu. select base menu want new application listed, , open "new" menu item @ level. in "command" section enter firefox, followed space , use ctrl-v enter url copied it's web page.
clean niceties descriptive name new application , longer description of does. save new menu entry , have own web-based application can executed clicking on entry in applications menu.
same done using prism or remote application tool of older firefox versions. difference in control of how works , can build own versions of particular on-line applications whenever , want it.
bump
same problem still present in later upgrades of ubuntu. i'm running 12.04 , still no prism or similar support executing on-line applications. apparently upgrade managers have not yet discovered "cloud computing" direct augment local applications on one's own computer.
work-around @ present seems making menu editor entry calls "firefox [some_web-based_application]", has problem of web based application going away or not being connected web, , application cannot called because not downloaded computer.
there possibly work-around of these on-line operations:
use "wget" command rip application it's place on web server , save in html form on own computer. may have re-arrange internal calls web-based...and application might callable within own computer.
seems easier , way more productive if ubuntu bring "prism" command worked purpose.
