Thread: File server setup (i'm a newb)
hi, i'm new forum, , have absolutely no idea version of linux. i've pretty used windows, though have been intrigued linux , it's many different forms.
have server run @ home. want fileserver, files can accessed central souce @ home, things films , music mostly, programs , applications etc. it's huge dump. runs ftp , website (just private family thing) no more 3 or 4 people view site or use ftp.
have running on 'borrowed' copy of server 2k3 test mule, , honest, it's slow, or pain in backside.
know lot of people use linux based servers, though i'd have @ , see if better platform need.
so, need is...
1. file server.
2. media server (mostly sharing films kids ps3)
3. web accessible ftp server.
4. web accessible website.
5. needs able run vuze/torrent download upload program.
6. needs able run teamspeak 3 server.
7. vnc (or similiar) usefull don't have keep going server change things or check on it.
8. needs compatible versions of windows xp onwards.
doesn't need dhcp or domain controller network, router dhcp bit already.
have registered domain name pointing home ip, , works ok (though it's little limited speed, should change soon).
machine is:-
athlon x2 255 @ 3.11ghz
2gb of ddr3 @667mhz
onboard sound , graphics (it doesn't run other above, sound isn't required teamspeak silent user).
approx 1.7tb of disc space, main windows drive 250gb.
more memory going added @ point, runs ok now.
so, going above, linux/ubuntu going operating system run instead of windows server? able use of above?
, lastly, how hard hasn't seen dos since dark ages, setup, secure , run above.
let me put way, in terms of knowing how use linux, i'm green, i'd glow in dark.
help, advice , suggestions apreciated greatly.
in advance,
gav.
