Thread: Macbook 8,1 - Natty / grub 2 does not install
hi everyone,
able install 11.04 (64bit) on mbp, after installation cannot boot it.
on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ma...elinstallation can find:
and seems problem, trying re-install grub live-cd results in error message. looking @ forum there lot of people running ubuntu on same laptop, question is: how??this information not work imac (11,1) users installing recent versions of ubuntu (e.g., maverick). presence of bios-grub partition ubuntu installer creates default (e.g., sda3) causes conflict prevents syncing gpt , mbr partition tables. deleting sda3 not since grub2 requires bios-grub partition, nor use either sda or sda4 aborting error: "this gpt partition table has no bios boot partition; embedding won't possible!". installing ubuntu bios-grub partition fails , installing without fails. see "single-boot".
i've tried installing ubuntu 10.10 , 10.04 lts have same problem.
thanks.
first, gptsync utility (or other methods of "syncing" disks on macs) creates hybrid mbr. recommend read on topic. hybrid mbrs dangerous hacks, , if don't understand them, you're opening world of pain using them. if don't care take time understand them, don't use them. either don't install windows or linux on mac, or learn how without using hybrid mbr. (that's difficult or impossible windows, can done linux using efi booting rather bios booting.)
second, sounds issue gptsync putting wrong partitions in hybrid mbr. corrected using more flexible tool. there versions of gptsync job, although common binaries aren't flexible. alternatively, can use gpt fdisk (gdisk) it.
finally, if care standard gpt rather dangerous hacked hybrid mbr, see this page wrote on topic. it's bit dated, since covers ubuntu 10.10. things bit better 11.04, @ least in theory. unfortunately, noted on page, macs have firmware can damaged ubuntu installation in efi mode. (i saw reference efibootmgr tool damage, haven't looked in detail.)
