my ebook long since completed in word.docx, exports xml, yet neither of these otherwise ubiquitous formats adequately supported on digital publishing platform available today.
so downloaded trial version of indesign cs6, created library , created new empty ebook within library. next step have been import xml new empty ebook option grayed out.
am on right track? have type 500-page document indesign , spend next 6 months reapplying of fonts, layout , cross-reference hyperlinks i've applied within source document, hoping along i'll able use result, or has indesign cs6 brought easier way table?
thanks help!

possibly... please note indesign appropriate tool create books with. can export epub, type of "e-book" (the term sufficiently vague include pdf, , word document considered "e-book"); can export png , jpeg, , it's not png or jpeg editor. same token, when export e-pub rough starting point professional e-pub, containing bits , pieces of text , images. @ point can leave -- provided used "every trick in book" best possible conversion indesign --, or, alternatively, open e-pub in real e-pub editor , finish that.

well, typing on indesign @ least avoid buggy , unreliable word import yup -- don't have use xml, , in fact avoid complicated , not-structured plain text. xml more suitable extremely structured data, such catalog. providing imports correctly , without of known (and reported) problems, indesign should able import word file correctly , without problem.
please consider purchasing starters' guide before diving indesign. recommended: sandee cohen's "visual quickstart guide". recommended: lynda.com's "essential training" video's (search forum, there must special offer floating around). also recommended: elizabeth castro's "from indesign cs5.5 epub , kindle", targeted @ segment of market (i haven't read it's safe assumes @ least basic level of id experience).
indesign professional piece of software, professional features , meant professionals; doesn't come clippy analog, asking "so want make e-book?".
