Thread: no valid session found after installing edubuntu-desktop

i've had 2 workstations on 2 years running ubuntu , going through progression of upgrades. these workstations kids use decided wanted install edubuntu-desktop. before taking leap, cloned vbox natty vm pc , installed edubuntu-desktop , related packages. went fine felt confident enough go ahead , install packages on kids' workstations.

on first attempt installed without error, on reboot, able new splash screen , login screen, on attempt login, message box says 'no valid session found'. click ok button , message box goes away, pc doesn't anything. i'm left nothing wallpaper , no allowable interaction. i'm able go tty1 , when checked .xsession-errors file see following...

configuration debug log can re-created
putting following in ~//etc/sabayon/sabayon-debug-log.conf
(use ';' separate domain names):

no default user directories
setting im through im-switch locale=en_us.
start im through /etc/x11/xinit/xinput.d/all_all linked /etc/x11/xinit/xinput.d/default.

i've tried uninstalling/reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, edubuntu-desktop, gdm, gnome, gnome-sessions, sabayon, nothing. i'm left functioning system exception of gui. happens irregardless of user or desktop environment chosen.

next option rebuild workstation , i'll have install scratch other workstation. prefer not doing great.
