can't use paint brush on a shape?

hello everyone,                                                                                      level: newbie'ish     os: win7 64bit     ps:cs6

 

i have made first object shapes tools, ls, , use of path selection tools , grouped everying via layers panel.

 

next suppose add new layer , draw rectangle shape , place shape layer below group , above layer w/a radial gradient ...

 

then suppose use paint brush on shape airbrush light (light in light lightbulb not in shade) effect when go select brush tool told must rasterize layer beforehand...

 

however, when rasterize layer shape becomes filled color leaves me unable achieve desired effect. draw shape color fill set none.

 

i checked "user manual" have been unable find answer can do.

 

i have tried using path tool create selection before trying use brush tool tells me rasterize beforehand.

 

so, can briefly tell me how can go using brush tool on shape (layer)? appreciate time.

i don't know tutorial you're working through, 1 can't paint on shape.

 

you can paint on raster layer mask, , (as you've discovered) can rasterize shape , paint on it.  paint on has made out of pixels, shape not.  shape is, under covers, color fill layer vector mask.  it's rendered display, or print or saving work product - it's not made of pixels.

 

you can paint on new, empty layer above shape.  perhaps that's tutorial implying?
