Thread: Hopefully dumb question re: SSH & printing
i've been researching while , i've arrived @ dumb question solve issue.
i'm running ubuntu server 11.04 on 1 computer, remote access (either lan or wan) available via ssh rsa keys (no password sign-in allowed). it's set store deja dup backups main "production" laptop, running regular desktop ubuntu 11.04.
i'd host hp officejet 5610 mfd on server, command line, no gui involved. removes web interface of http://localhost:631 on server, hp connected to.
i've gotten far enabling laptop see hp printer on sever , send (or attempt send) print jobs it, unsuccessfully.
question: ssh sufficient handle print jobs? or need enable protocol/service scan , print? (cups running on client , server.) if so, decrease security of ssh connection?
cups robust command-line tools, don't need web interface.
also, cups' web interface not related whether there's gui installed on server - laptop browser can access server cups page, too.
here how troubleshoot these, in order:
1) server firewall blocking port 631, preventing cups communicating?
2) cups on server working? can print test page on server command line?
3) cups on server configured share printers?
4) cups on laptop working? cups on laptop configured listen shared printers? old printer config (usually same name) sitting on laptop, overruling share?
5) try print laptop document server-shared printer. shared printer show in printing dialogs?
