LR 4 Catalog Files

i confused something.

 

i see various catalog files (lrcat) on hard drive.  appears me if these of 2 types.  first, there appears call single "working" lrcat file.  seems updated, time make changes catalog.

 

second, there appear backup lrcat files created when exit lightroom , tell create backup.  these types of files created in folders format date & time.  time create 1 of these backup lrcat files, can direct folder should saved in.  have 4 or 5 of these....i periodically delete older versions.

 

it makes sense, know how change location of "working" lrcat file?  right now, "working" lrcat file in following folder:

 

pictures\lightroom\backups\2012-01-06 1552\lightroom 4 catalog.lrcat

 

the preview folder in pictures\lightroom\backups\2012-01-06 1552.

 

i should note old lr3 catalog file , previews in same 2012-01-06 1552 folder.  haven't deleted them, yet.

 

i can place newer backup files in location want when asked to.  however, don't see how change location of "working" backup.  not sure how "working" backup got 2012-01-06 1552 folder, anyway, because didn't upgrade lr3 lr4 until  few months ago....i believe june. 

 

i want place in new folder because name of current one, 2012-01-06 1552, confusing.  want "working lrcat folder" or that.  want keep separate backups.  try rename it, don't know if lr lose track of is.

 

will have create new catalog in lr4 in order put want, , re-import of photos?  preview folders , files?  i'd keep these in same location catalog files.

lightroom doesn't care folder things in, in 1 sense, making mountain out of molehill. easiest thing do nothing, , stop letting issue bother you.

 

nevertheless, if must, if folder working catalog resides named 2012-01-016 1552 , want "working lrcat folder", close lightroom , use operating system rename folder, , double-click on proper .lrcat file.

extremely important rule of lightroom usage, on importance scale of 1 10, rates @ 197.8. never re-import photos! never! never! not once! did mention should never re-import photos? because bad things can happen when that. all.

 

in similar vein, lightroom excellent tool managing photos. seem concerned managing catalog file, , in opinion, that's not direction need spend time , effort on. manage photos, not catalog file.
