Thread: Dual boot menu keeps growing

on internet machine use ubuntu exclusively, on working machine i'm dual booting ubuntu , xp.
i've been using ubuntu year or so. decided i'd learn use command line needed fix things, os has been reliable first thing resembles problem i've encountered.

problem: boot list keeps growing every image update.

followed directions given in change boot options, [/boot/grub] directory contains no file named menu.lst.
contents of [/boot] directory contains following:

root@base:/boot/grub# find menu.lst
find: `menu.lst': no such file or directory
root@base:/boot/grub# cd /boot
root@base:/boot# dir

list looks lot see in boot menu, , selecting latest version boots ubuntu fine.
i'm guessing should create file menu.lst, don't want screw things up, thought i'd ask experts advice how should proceed. suggestions appreciated.
thanks.

use synaptic delete old kernels.
save latest , 1 before it.
make sure not delete latest kernel.
