Thread: Brightness Issues with 2 Laptops

alright, have 2 laptops, samsung q430-11 (i5 450m, nvidia 310m, intel chipset, ubuntu 11.04, problem still persists on 10.10), , thinkpad t61 (the model quadro graphics, not x1300, ubuntu 10.10). both of these laptops have issues brightness control.

i'll start q430-11, since has bigger problem. can't adjust brightness @ on one, no matter do. locked on full, time. funny thing is, happens on unix based systems (mac os x has same problem, fedora, opensuse, , mint), think has graphics. full acceleration on os's.

thinkpad though, different story. brightness control works part, goes max when using fn + home key combo. if go power management preferences, or try use slider, resets brightness down lower level. can push fn + home key combo again, it's quite annoying. also, slider in power management doesn't work. @ all.

have issue thinkpad related graphics card. animations laggy when minimizing , maximizing windows medium desktop effects. don't think graphics working properly, remember handled windows xp relatively graphic effects , render 720p relative ease. plus, card isn't low end

have suggestions?

what
code:
lsmod
return?

q430, here interesting article: http://www.voria.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=834. apparently fixed problem using mbp_nvidia_bl module (note uses arch , called nvidia_bl there). according instructions, needed remove 2 modules, video , samsung_backlight. posting modules via lsmod let see if loaded , called.

430, if have /etc/x11/xorg.conf file, adding:
code:
option "registrydwords" "enablebrightnesscontrol=1"
to device section of file might work.

other things try include kernel parameters "acpi_osi=\"linux\"" , "acpi_backlight=vendor". see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/gr...0during%20boot instructions on how test parameters.
