Thread: Firewall necessary?

i on home voip router has nat , minor "firewall" features. there advantage connect home network router through ipcop firewall machine? and/or put ipcop firewall on output of cable modem , put home network on 1 subnet , voip router on dmz. on complicating things?

you might overcomplicating little bit. , depends on how many machines have , how want network set up.

depends on functionality of existing voip router, instance if it's low end router, doesn't offer in way of firewalling outside of innate discretion nat grants. ipcop can used both firewall (stateful) ids , , intelligent routing instrument. if it's baseline security you're looking ipcop offers more in way of features, again depending on voip router offers.

if me personally, use ipcop separate 2 networks ie: voip on 1 network (not dmz'ed seperate network). personal equipment on different network. reasoning behind don't want direct routing path voip home network.

edit: diagram didn't come out right more explanation coming lol...

ok lack of awesome ascii diagram made instead attempt explain came in head...

internet connecting ipcop box

route internet 3 different networks , instance 192.168.0.x (home network) , 172.0.0.x ( voip network using voip router or not) , 10.0.0.1 (optional dmz or wifi network).

seperating networks in such manner isolate penetration if occur, using ipcop @ front line can run ids on makes relatively easy monitor network traffic, opposed portion of it, occur if voip router in front. how if wanted paranoid home security set up.

granted bit paranoid , require ipcop box have 4 network interfaces. however, if on binge secure home network along these lines.
