Thread: I need a VPN / Nagios box. Is Ubuntu the right choice?

i have bunch of windows servers , connect 2 networks. 1 of them public ips (an entire /24) protected pfsense firewall. other network 48 port gigabit switch each machine accesses using private (192.168) static ip on separate nic. there no gateway/dns/dhcp server on private network , want keep way.

want deploy ubuntu server connect both networks. server not sit behind our firewall. have public ip address our /24 , connected switch feeds our firewall , second nic static private ip connected our private network. server need run nagios, run few command line items grep log files , serve output via apache, , act vpn allow outside machine secure access private network. sitting on private network various web based guis switches, ups boxes, etc not want exposed directly internet. both of these networks mission critical can't change existing settings , can't add existing firewall. there couple of vpn connections @ time.

do think ubuntu 10.04 lts server (32 bit) able handle this? looking @ running on supermicro atom d525 box 3g of ram , small ssd storage.

machine dedicated tasks listed above , nothing else. have nagios running on 1 ubuntu server , command line/grep stuff running on 2 others. need retire these dinosaurs , combine them 1 new box can vpn. load on of other boxes minimal. sure hardware listed can it. don't know if ubuntu server right choice. considering freebsd more familiar ubuntu.

opinions?

thanks

bob

if you, i'd use debian purpose. able utilize ubuntu knowledge, have advantages of slow-moving release cycle , solid, well-tested software. use ubuntu desktop can have new flashy things, use debian servers. lot of different opinions here, one.
