Thread: Optimising Ubuntu for speed

hi didn't know post decided on "general" section.
i'm working kind of "old" computer, low hdd , graphics, decent amount of ram , processor ( old computer, , bough company use )
want speed things bit, don't mind waiting bit longer when gimp loading, firefox giving me issues, loads slower, , internet isn't fast suppose be, started playing game on facebook , fine, lately takes ever load , things in it, tweaked options in it, , better, when click response time slower ( altogether quicker still not enough )
there can do?
in advance.

as easy step, should make sure computer isn't running resource hungry background programmes. example, when watch hd movies on (reasonably old) laptop, have disable compiz, else playback laggy.

more indepth solution, perhaps consider switching more lightweight de (such lxde or xfce), perhaps reinstalling ubuntu minimal install, installing xfce overtop. option lightweight distro, such puppy linux. doing reduce computer resource use, mean programmes run more smoothly.
