Thread: Server Randomly Inaccessable to Clients

i have ubuntu server 10.04.02 on dell power edge t310 using samba mainly, along spark , proftp. server set brand new few months ago , has had networking problems ever since. @ first seemed happen couple of weeks after installation, happening @ least twice week. server become inaccessible windows clients if turned off. doesn't reply pings either. have tried using second, spare, nic , same results. during same time frame of no samba can ssh in remotely , can't. until rebooting server "fix" problem, that's not case. last time @ location restarted server , still not available on network. so, tried ifconfig -a , saw eth0 had no ip (it's static.) went networking file , looked okay (i had eth1 commented out since wasn't being used.) , restarted /etc/init.d/networking restart command , threw error in red letters: can't read networking file or that. went networking file , uncommented eth1 , it's static configuration (it's still physically disconnected network) saved changes , tried same restart command , server available win clients (samba , spark don't use ftp much.) 2 days ago, today couldn't access samba again (i access vis ssh remotely.) restarted server , still couldn't access samba. used /etc/init.d/networking restart command (no errors time) , works now, can't ssh in remotely. suggestions?
