Thread: Unable to install NVIDIA driver on a Laptop

hello all,

know problem i'm describing here mentioned in many previous threads, sadly solutions suggested there didn't work me.
appreciate help...

i'm new ubuntu , tried install v. 11.4 on new dell inspirion n5110, nvidia gt525m graphics card.

fine (unity worked), until installed recommended driver via 'additional drivers' in 'system-->administration':
since then, unity stopped working , gnome booted.

after trying run "sudo nvidia-xconfing' required, got massage:

"validation error: data incomplete in file /etc/x11/xorg.conf.
device section "default device" must have driver line."
(i checked file. missing).

rebooting after that, didn't allow gnome boot @ all, , forced me delete xorg.conf via terminal gnome.

i've tried:
updating drivers- same result.
deleting every trace of nouveau driver- same result.
editing xorg.conf manually , adding graphic's card name- same result.
installing 'bumblebee'- stuck computer , caused mouse-pointer shiver (i have no idea was).

know how fix that?

thanks,
g.

p.s.
i'd apologize annoying grammatical errors.

you have nvidia optimus setup. means have both integrated intel gpu , (more or less) discrete nvidia gpu. thought laptop should able seemlessly switch between them save battery, nvidia have said impossible on linux, , haven't made effort develop linux solution.

however, mentioned bumblebee, community-made solution proves _is_ possible, , nvidia don't care linux segment personal laptops. bumblebee still rough, though, noticed (nvidia isn't doing them).

because of don't think can use nvidia card nvidia's own drivers. if delete xorg.conf, in practice doing letting x use intel circuit exclusively. leaves nvidia circuit unused, think doesn't "turn off", might impact battery life.

if has different experiences, please correct me. i'm not touched this. have dual graphics laptop, have option switch nvidia card in bios setup, eliminates problems 2 cards talking.
