if lightroom handled process version way should, box not exist. i.e. lightroom know whether there process specific settings in it, , handle in appropriate fashion.

however, lightroom's handling of process version in presets abysmal.

if used presets, *never* check box, , instead, keep presets process-specific settings in special folder, and/or give indicative name.

then manage process-specific presets without lightroom intervention, until lightroom handling brought snuff, @ time existing presets retrofitted, if need be.

in case, if preset presently universally applicable, recommend *not* checking box, since there no lr5 yet. when lr5 released, can revisit decision, , consider retrofitting.

if preset not universally applicable (*does* include process-version specific settings), it's tougher call. either way, won't right thing if try , apply photo wrong process version. it's matter of how prefer fail. if have box checked, convert pv , apply preset. unfortunately, won't let conversion "settle" before applying preset, won't work correctly, if @ all, , anyway, it's not convert pv way, if there pre-existing edits. on other hand, if don't have box checked, , apply photo wrong process version, ignore process-version specific settings, ain't fun either... - won't tell of this, or "clients" must take full responsibility knowing whether applying preset compatibly edited photos or not.

if decide want or check box, still handle presets in aforementioned fashion, i.e. name , store scope of applicability of preset clear.

maybe other preset users have better idea you.
