Thread: 11.04 - Why isn't laptop power management simple?
hi there,
i've been using ubuntu year after migrating windows 7. find ubuntu , linux great (enjoying unity well!). 1 thing has surprised me ubuntu - why aren't laptops , simple common sense power management supported out of box?
here's couple of simple things mean ms windows well:
- when booting on ac default screen brightness high
- when ac unplugged dim screen brightness down
- when ac unplugged, use less power in general (hd, wifi, cpu, etc.)
- when ac plugged in, resume full power mode
- all above brightness levels, settings, etc. configurable via gui
windows has done stuff well. every time doing above google few hours, end re-discovering laptop-mode-tools, , realise can never working. missing something? there super easy package can install nice gui lets me set few settings , works?
number of ubuntu laptop users out there guess i'm surprised every individual user needs work hard these common power management features working. there must hundreds of thousands of laptop ubuntu users (even more?) suffering short laptop use when on battery? or hp pavilion dv6 isn't supported , else has above working on laptops?
if has tips, secret laptop support mode needs enabling, or links straight forward instructions laptop-mode-tools work 11.04 helpful me , i'm sure others looking same thing.
happy ubuntuing
different hardware manufacturers implements features differently. tell microsoft how. don't tell us. refuse answer if ask politely.
linux , ubuntu developers take software far can. if hardware manufacturer refuses tell how detect 'on battery power' models, software won't work.
conversely, if find way detect such events software isn't using, please file bug report!
