Thread: Can Ubuntu boot off of EFI using Grub?
i've looked around while this, , i've seen mixed answers. want reinstall os's (windows 7, mac os x, ubuntu, opensuse, fedora, , mint), , on gpt disk partitioning , flexibility reasons. however, aware windows 7 cannot installed on standard bios based system gpt. lucky computer supports efi![]()
question remains same- can ubuntu boot off of efi using grub? plan use chameleon primary bootloader, can't boot linux (yet), need grub.
yes, linux can boot using efi; however, ubuntu's efi support still rather flaky, imho, largely because of barely-adequate grub support efi , weak grub configuration efi in ubuntu. preference use elilo, simpler , more reliable, in experience. in fact, if @ possible recommend installing ubuntu gpt disk in bios mode , switch (u)efi mode after fact -- especially if it's not first os install, otherwise in nasty surprise: ubuntu's installer, when running in uefi mode, erases efi system partition (esp), other efi-based oses install boot loaders. a bug report on problem exists, doesn't seem have gathered attention ubuntu developers.
incidentally, chameleon bios-based boot loader; afaik, doesn't work on (u)efi-based systems. might find harder, not easier, install os x on uefi-based pc on bios-based pc, if that's you're planning. if you've got mac, windows won't install using mac's variety of efi (and chameleon doesn't work on real macs, afaik). if you're planning on doing hackintoshing, should take os x discussions elsewhere, since forum moderators frown on such discussions here. ubuntu side of it, though, here's good.
oh, 1 more thing: might want check out this page of mine, describes use of uefi software can installed on bios-based pc. of page inapplicable you, have notes on installing fedora, opensuse, , ubuntu on systems using software, , of discussions applicable "real" (u)efi computers. (the stuff copying installation files usb flash drives irrelevant, though.)
