trying use gparted live resize vdi image (virtual disk hostclone vm). way know explain give brief background on i'm trying , main challenge that's come haunt me on , on , on throughout process.

wanted make exact clone of operating system , p2v i'd have host , guest identical - except - don't want guest same size host (disk size wise). want guest reside on local disk, not external usb or that.

well, way go, p2v thing in first place you're going end guest same size (disk wise) system took from. system took uses entire local disk - every bit of space on it. it's not used space use whole disk. idea.

managed figure out how clone , p2v sucker @ , did last night. ended though vm 6.4 gig of used space total size of 39 gig or , dynamically expanding disk. vm on local disk had 7 gig of free space left (on actual, physical disk mean). 7 gig far cry 30 gig (the remaining free space in dynamically expanding virtual disk) - , can't see me dealing issues come when start overloading thing because forgot (jobs won't complete , waste time, error messages, etc, etc). i'm not gonna handle sort of thing well.

go bright idea i'd set vm boot cd , boot gparted live cd in it. i'd use resize thing down 10 gig; and, if turned out way things work gparted (never used gparted bef), i'd delete leftover partition in end.

here's problem ran against (came bite ^$$ again). gparted starts running resize job , runs - ever, , gets point , tells me can't finish job or because there's not space left on hard drive (it's talking real, physical drive now).

i'm wondering if gparted uses temp folder processes first; and, if so, , if can relocated through setting in gparted. maybe can locate temp folder on external drive job completes? don't know.

not sure best way go shrinking vdi have read of others doing way , seemed simplest route.

in advance , apologize such long, drawn out post. want clear i'm trying answer may focused , appropriate.
