Thread: GRUB: How to configure for what I would have thought were commonplace requirements?

i installed "ubuntu 11.04 alpha 2" on intel computerr.[1]

had installed debian linux (presumably version 6.0) on /dev/sda1 partition[2], set installer install ubuntu linux on /dev/sda2.

in 2 hours installation time, during time must presumably have downloaded lot non-alpha-2 version somewhere in ubuntu.com, had installed 2.4g on /dev/sda2 , but none of needed changes seem have been made boot sector.

computer not boot ubuntu linux. booted again straight debian linux without presenting me bootloader menu.[3]

can tell me how rectify this, can boot either debian linux[4] on /dev/sda1 or ubuntu linux on /dev/sda2 ?

presumably need change bootloader, presumably grub, rectify problem, though have been searching, reading , trying install grub on week now, can't locate find straightforward instructions must exist somewhere shown me how configure grub allow booting /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 . example of 1 of number of pages have read has not given me answers in form have found helpful http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=194877 . perhaps others may able see there answers need, cannot.

need instructions is:

1. file edit want grub cause computer boot either /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2 . (is /etc/default/grub or what?)

2. need put configuration file , ...

3. ... what command (grub-install, grub-mkconfig, grub-mkimage, ...? ) what command line parameters need run write required information boot sector of /dev/sda(, /dev/sda1, dev/sda2 or whatever)?

can linux installed boot partition on physical disk drive other first?

also, tell me if possible boot linux (or os) parttion on other on /dev/sda (or /dev/hda)? not first preference have install 2 linux distributions on /dev/sda .

footnote(s)

1. obtained dvd "linux user , developer" magazine (http://www.linuxuser.co.uk/. unable @ moment issue was, have been 1 in last 6 months around issue 97. dvd had on label "pureos 3.0" , "opensuse11.4"

2. /dev/sda3 set swap partition installation of debian linux installation of ubuntu linux. no other partitions other /dev/sda1 debian , /dev/sda2 ubuntu, used

3. though can't boot ubuntu linux, appreciate, @ least, fact installation of ubuntu linux has not in way prevented existing installation of debian linux functioning. on more 1 recent occasion, has not been experience when have installed second or subsequent distribution of linux.

4. debian linux lacks drupal ver 7.2.

people expertise solving problem, may able solve problem described in thread cannot change default os!
