Thread: Noob With A Freezing Netbook

ok... made forum account, first time doing on here. of first time doing linux system beyond surfing web, using open office, , installing skype.

so, here's issue is:

have dell mini netbook, running ubuntu 8.04 - "the hardy heron". other skype , chrome, don't have programs on netbook didn't "add/remove" program.

long time now, have been having issue netbook after being on 5 minutes, long 10 minutes, system star freeze up, point nothing works, not mouse. know it's freezing , not locking because can move mouse little bit, slow able anything, , normal processes take seconds normally, take upwards of 5 minutes. @ least.

@ 1 point found , ran ubuntu-version of task manager, system monitor. sat , watched 5 minutes took freeze started happening. right system froze up, both of cpu's , ram maxed out @ same time.


@ point, go task manager , see shouldn't running, , end whatever see don't like, , go delete files program(s). or @ least, system restore (because have backups off computer). don't know how of on ubuntu.

so.... ideas? netbook ran fine 1 1/2years before started happening, , @ first wasn't issue happened time. happened every , then, restarting netbook fix few days. , became every week thing, every day, , every time netbook turns on... kinda sounds hardware issue, because software shouldn't change on time if there no change put it.

way, @ least i'd know if there's way totally wipe , re-install netbook scratch. don't need of files on it, that's not issue. i've heard might want using xubuntu of i'm having memory issue, there way replace ubuntu altogether xubuntu?

if want sit , watch since it's 5 minutes or so... install htop

sudo apt-get install htop

then run in terminal

htop

and watch cpu usage - when "freezes" note program/process hogging cpu (at top of column) , report back. had computer cups stealing cpu because of bad printer driver.

can hit 'k', [enter] kill process selected , see if brings normal.
