Thread: Pretty frustrated. Thinking about giving up on linux

so love idea of linux , appreciate of support in forums. looks linux has come long way people use gui's seems can't finish setting things , it's 100% frustration.

after loading on, working create wanted. i'm using ultimate edition 2.6.1 based on ubuntu 10.04. hate animated cursor comes it, go "cursors." right. nothing. don't know why it's there. find "appearance" , i'm pleasantly surprised can change lot of stuff how looks , came out awesome. noticed none of special effects worked. because did not have nvidia driver card. no problem. go online, find 1 , 10 different ways of loading it. try 5 different ways, never knowing if i'm messing up. final 1 being take lot of scary steps linux newb, voila! loaded. effects there , looked pretty cool. however, appearance had set changed. no problem, i'll change back. go appearance , start putting things back, cursor change when it's on program. when it's moved on operating system windows , stuff stays stupid spinning arrow. window frame around each window wouldn't change @ , it's dark can't see controls.

internet runs slow, when boot windows, there's no problem. go online again. said unplug computer , hold down start button bleed of charge, wait 10 minutes , come back. did , seemed make lot of things snappier. next time booted. same thing. internet works , it's fine, of time it's unusable. not witness in windows.

have book tells me how software. go "ubuntu software center," or use "synaptic." conveniently leaves out when package isn't there or name has cryptic identifier tacked on end.

when first started endeavor few weeks ago, loaded windows, loaded linux. no problem. put them on 2 separate drives, didn't have worry partitions. set , started tackling 1 thing @ time. told allow updates. when did (not kernel update), broke internet connection permanently. long searches didn't @ all. reinstalled linux , broke grub. gave no options windows @ all. more long searches , fixed grub , there window option, wouldn't boot it. fixed windows bootloader , works again. ask. allow updates again? don't want of these searches , learn how set of stuff , working again, break 1 click of update button.

ok, i've been venting while now. nice have kind of life preserver here. doing wrong? should use kind of friendlier version of linux? linux guru's know every little detail of parts make work? don't want go windows, have @ least able surf web. that's 90% of computer usage. couldn't type in linux. had go windows connection worked.

linux new you, learning process , should expect bumps in road learning

on experiences windows when new you, , if you've had no problems either have charmed life ever, or never did it.

great thing linux choice, there many variants out there, if 1 causes problems, try another. download , give ubuntu 11.04 try, or mint or pclinux.
breaking stuff, thats part of learning process surely?
know have screwed ubuntu death quite few times , come out knowing more.
, apart win7 , own personal cutdown version of winxp pro, ubuntu faster , easier install. messing isnt problem, if cant fix spend 30 minutes , reinstall.


slow internet, open new thread title , explain in detail problem, adding terminal output of lspci , iwconfig.
