Thread: Static Wireless IP with Network Manager

hi all,

have been using google , forum searches afternoon without success. here goes:

want set static ip on laptop connects via wireless home network.

have 11.04 installed on laptop. when try use manual ipv4 setting in network manager save option gets greyed out. tried edit /etc/network/interfaces file examples find on net refer eth0. tried replacing wlan0 did not work.

tried installing wicd kept getting "bad password" errors though know password correct. number of people recommended uninstalling network manager wicd work many other posts said uninstalling network manager didn't didn't want go ahead , uninstall unnecessarily. besides figure if ubuntu distributed network manager there must reason having it.

do static ip address client on wireless connection?

help

ok. think have solved following steps.

1. went network manager , selected "connection information" on information window saw following:
ipv4
ip address: 192.168.1.6 (this item wanted change , make static)
broadcast address: 192.168.1.255
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default route: 192.168.1.1
primary dns: 192.168.1.1

2. went network manager , selected "edit connections"
3. selected wireless tab , wireless network wanted edit
4. clicked on edit button , clicked on ipv4 settings tab.
5. changed method automatic (dhcp) manual
6. under addresses clicked add
7. under address input static ip address wanted:
192.168.1.4
8. under netmask put same subnet mask in step 1 above.
9. under gateway put same default route in step 1 above.
10. under primary dns put same primary dns in step 1 above.
11. disconnected , reconnected , seems work.

cheers

adrian

i presume have router? set dhcp? routers allow static dhcp give same ip time. however, don't think (at least non-commercial) routers allow dhcp , static set @ same time.
