Thread: U-10.04LTS, Format HD

hi all,

i'm messing xp desktop, i've set 40mb hd slave, in pc, right i'm on xp , formatting slave hd.

after it's done formatting, want pull out master hd, set slave master , total install of u-10.04.

still have smaller , original hd xp on it.

question is, doing in way work?

michael

update 1: assume since hd 1 had been in use doesn't 'fdisk', anyway, i've formatted , ubuntu , 5 dots have been running on 5 minutes now.

update 2: ubuntu 10.04 loaded asking user/password when enter usual, not expecting work since haven't been set yet, of course authentication fails, whats going on?

update 3: used restart ubuntu screen, removed cd , press enter... restarting cd (wubi cd) , got different result, message; error occured while mounting/sys/fs/fuse/connections

press s skip mounting or m manual recovery. (questions: since newly formatted hd without windows, should use text based install of ubuntu instead of wubi cd?)

update 4: mind shut down day, have continue tomorrow.

are saying want end 1 disk xp , 1 disk ubuntu?
yes.
don't need prepare 40gb disk ubuntu. ubuntu installer everything. in fact, have because xp not write linux partition formats. choose "use entire disk" in installer (which reformat whole disk).

disconnect xp disk during ubuntu install protect selection accidents.

if want run dual-boot menu, once ubuntu installed, make slave again , reconnect xp master. set bios boot off ubuntu first , when booted run sudo update-grub add xp menu.

caveat. on older mobos , pata drive letters bios assigns may change when drives changed master slave. important ubuntu mounts partitions uuid , not drive letter. not sure whether know means, once ubuntu has installed , before change slave, please post output of:
cat /etc/fstab and
sudo blkid can check you.
