if change server (e.g. when moving hosting company), you'll have move joomla's files + database.
documentation process: http://docs.joomla.org/copying_a_joomla_website
from description understand did copy files, suppose didn't copy database & change configuration.php file on new server reflect new database credentials.
to copy mysql database, can follow steps described here: http://docs.joomla.org/copying_a_joomla ... r_computer
alternatively, i'd recommend use akeeba backup create backup on old server,
copy .jpa backup file new server, akeeba's kickstart.php,
and restore website on new server (using kickstart).
