Laptop filling up, what is a good work around?

just started digital year, coming film.  amateur took 3000 raw files camera on weeks vacation.  take laptop (macbook pro 2012 firewire 800, usb 2.0, no usb 3.0), download files onto lr4 , @ same time, make backup using portable external lacie 1tb drive via fw800 bring me.

i edit, not using mbp screen, use wide gamut nec pa monitor.  use lr4, various nik software programs, , alien exposures 4.  finding using internal memory on mbp comes 750gb.

for use laptop primary computer, how manage when memory starts become problem.

my initial plan buy external hd fw800 , move older files/folders wouldn't edit anymore. assume require generating new lr catalog on external hd.

i keep more current files/folders on mbp editing quicker.  once editing finished, move files external hd , update catalog associated external drive.

is reasonable process or there better one?

in terms of moving files laptop external drive , generating new lr4 catalog, how do step step?  i'm not computer saavy @ all.

also, external drives become full eventually.  can attached in daisy chain fashion expand needed?

i amazed @ how many people have misconception.

your photos can on many hard drive like. lightroom doesn't care. not need new catalog new hd. in fact, people recommend single catalog photos except in situations subject matter doesn't overlap (e.g. separate catalogs business , personal photos makes sense; separate catalogs hard disk makes no sense @ all)

the easy solution problem external hard disk, , put (or all) of photos on hard disk. work, either need move photos new hd using lr folder panel; or move them using operating system , reconnect. when ready this, let know, can provide more detailed explanation.
