Migrating 1.7.1 localhost install to 2.5 (Newbie alert...) - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support
hi guys 
long story short, i've been localhost developing (fairly simple) site friends while now, realise 1.7.1 install woefully out of date...
even more embarrassing, although computer geek trade, databases not area of expertise, , first foray website creation, please gentle, i'm feeling incredibly out of depth is! want learn - , learn lots
anyway, need update 2.5, of instruction sets can find upgrading existing sites, not ones in localhost development. so, can please ask 2 things?
1) backing - simple step step instructions backing existing localhost install. if guide exists managed miss, feel free point me in right direction!
2) upgrade process - suspect lots of these exist, pointer simplest, newbie friendly 1 appreciated

first install akeeba backup. once installed, make backup of site. save files , database. save somewhere outside website in case need recover later. it's installable package once unzip in web space.
next, try using joomla admin update joomla function. it's either in main control panel or in extensions > extension manager > install. in first case, joomla should download latest version , install it. in second case, download joomla 2.5.8 , install extension manager.
