Thread: BUG: soft lockup while updating in recovery mode

hi, encountered error while trying update natty narwhal:

"bug: soft lockup - cpu#0 stuck 61s! [kswapd0:26]"

let me explain. i'm new ubuntu user, of 2 months. installed desktop edition disc dual boot, along windows 7, on old dell inspiron 1501 laptop. worked fine after few tries. when tried update through gui, kept freezing / crashing , wouldn't start normally, used recovery mode grub menu. there update seemed working, left it, when came error above on screen , repeating every minute or so. should do? don't want lose data. remember, i'm new this.

hi, welcome fora.

happens if boot computer , run

code:
sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
?

please post error messages, if any.
