Thread: A few simple LAN questions

trying learn bit lans, routers, etc. have 2 questions:

1) using 'network tools' ran port scan network address 192.168.1.1 (my wireless router), , got following:

80 open www
1780 open unknown
10080 open amanda

1780 'unknown' , 10080 'amada' ports?

2) can use network tool or iperf measure bandwidth between laptop , wireless router?

1) amanda open source backup/archive software
http://wiki.zmanda.com/index.php/main_page
more info on tcp ports (not including amanda) here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/tcp_port_numbers

2) you'll need time transfer of files between 2 meaningful. difficult because routers don't have filestores , web resources typically not big (leading inaccurate measurements). if you're lucky enough have router usb socket, might able put large file (video clip example) , measure access speed.
