Thread: Ubuntu 11.04 installation woes

i here terribly upset!

installed ubuntu 11.04 (after being satisfied installation via wubi) in 2 laptops (a compaq presario , vaio vgn-cs) using bootable usb flashdrive (via unetbootin) in separate partition (c windows 7, d storing files, ubuntu in partition). worked few hours. ran problems. tried correct them no avail! here list of woes:

in vaio:
ran display errors related nvidia graphics drivers. somehow managed update them , system working fine thereafter. booted windows , shutdown. when rebooted thereafter, see grub menu. but, when select boot ubuntu, blank screen , flashing '_' cursor (thankfully able load windows7).
saw lot of threads same problems, not find offered less complex, followable, step-by-step instruction. tried follow of them, failed. reinstalled ubuntu (well! not though! selected upgrade 11.04 11.04 did not want lose files), same problem persisted.

in compaq,
if not enough, compaq facing more problems.
working fine, when when started firefox got message,
"could not initialize application's security component. cause problems files in application's profile directory. please check directory has no read/write restrictions , hard drive not full or close full, recommended exit application , fix problem. if continue use session, might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features."
saw threads problem also, unable solve it.
decided ignore , started using chrome instead. now, new problems sprung up. screen freeze temporarily, launchbar on left alone go blank, shutdown button on top move further right going out of view. when press shutdown button on laptop, normal shutdown screen (which has options suspend/shutdown/restart etc.) had rectangular boxes in instead of letters.
reinstalled (upgraded 11.04 11.04) ubuntu here also. no change! , top all, windows 7 in computer giving blue screen error! (while typing did complete reinstall, , firfox error not there. hope freezing/hanging , bluescreen error corrected/not recur).

should do? ubuntu running wubi installation. thought installing ubuntu in separate partition make ubuntu faster , more stable (as detached/independent windows, that, if windows encounters problem use ubuntu). seems not case!

ubuntu excellent piece of software no doubt. seems that, busy people have lot of things on plate (with no time fix complicated errors through terminal commands) not right option. example, i've been using windows more 10 years , have gone command prompt few times. done through guis.

few of suggestions (they may not appealing, novices me find them useful):
1) initial installation should easier. say, in windows select partition want install in , that's all!. here had create separate root , swap partitions myself. (although friend here told me done default installer, found not easy use windows installer).
2) less reliance on terminal. every problem have go terminal. common people not know these commands. and, don't have time or patience learn them. guis suit them.
3) easy installation , uninstallation. although ubuntu software center quite good, installing separately downloaded sofware difficult (except .deb files). why there no installer (like .exe windows). installing softwares through terminal commands quite tedious. despite trying hard, still not figure out way install .tar.gz files! (and if [who enthusiastic on computers], find difficult, friends know next nothing computers reluctant give windows easy them). uninstallation through synaptic package manager not easy. there lot of packages single software, confused on uninstall.
4) make easy find information. inbuilt file not of help. ubuntu site's instructions bit complex ordinary user. each , every problem have rely on forum (but people here friendly , extremely helpful! have solved quite bunch of problems thier far). robust step step step guide essential, troubleshooting.

not complaining, ubuntu should become more user friendly if wants find more users. hope happens soon! luck!

wanted tell community problems faced (before give altogether!) may find helpful!

keep in touch ubuntu always. still love it, despite flaws....
