Why are my brush strokes looking grainy?

hi - got out of blue commission t-shirt ....  i'm getting crash course in illusrator.  been using of 1 day.

here's trouble though - when use brushes make actual brush strokes, resulting paths "grainy" - aren't vectors/paths (not sure of exact terminology, bear me, please).

from understand, drawing freehand brush should produce vectored lines - , can play points within freehand brush strokes.   when zoom out, strokes drew brush "pixelly", while ones done pen tool nice , smooth (i should note custom brush made, butt other paths i've applied brush fine).

is normal?  should resign myself having go on using pen tool (there's lot of fine, irregular line work)?  or there setting of brush or special key i'm missing?

if helps, here's screencap of part of image....

i know it's small, might able see mean main vertical line meets angled line.  near-vertical brushed in, angled 1 path brush overlay....

(here zoom of above pic if it's small http://www.c2comics.com/images/lines02.jpg
