Thread: Raid 1

i have raid pci card set up, supposedly set mode 1 (mirror) before installed ubuntu (single-core cpu, used 10.04). however, appears installation put directly on first drive, ignoring 2nd completely.

looking through couple of tutorials, seem helpful installing software raid setup. 1 mentions hardware setup requires sort of kernel compatibility ubuntu use it, seems case card 7 years old.

here pretty configured ubuntu system (mail/imap server, web server, , mail client) running on /dev/sda1. impression tutorials after formatting 2 equal-sized partitions, proceed set software raid device , make boot partition. concern doing existing system might bad, if other /etc/fstab refers /dev/sda1. unnecessary concern? can happily follow command-line tutorial steps , plug away @ new raid 1 setup?

what specific raid card? there raid bios can boot (control-r or control-m @ pc boot splash)? configure hardware raid in raid bios or use utility (loaded floppy or cd). select raid parameters (raid1 mirror , select strip size, chunk size, , other parameters). stick default parameters unless know doing.

after raid1 configured proceed installation. in case, since have working system on 1 disk, may able extend raid second disk using vendor-supplied raid utility. utility automatically copy data on second disk , have functioning raid1.

if can't find raid bios or setup utility, can use software raid , there quite few tutorials how that.
