Thread: Server with SSD
hello,
i'm setting ubuntu server replace aged pentium iv slackware box. it's dell inspiron 560 modest core-2 duo processor, 8 gigs of ram, , pair of sized hard disks.
came upon deal on couple of 40gig intel ssds. i'd use 1 in server. i'd use ssd relatively invariant stuff, because write
slow, , life-limited in # of writes. so:
/bin
/usr/bin
/boot
/etc
/lib
/usr/lib
/usr/local/lib
/mnt
/opt
best way imho achieve make ssd root, , mount
hard drive partitions/filesystems places such as:
/var
/media ( here read , write giant files. hard disks fine. 1 work
fine if 1 particular hard drive dedicated this. )
/root
/home
/tmp
quick "df" yields list of filesystems. there 4 not tied device!
/dev
/dev/shm
/var/run
/var/lock
( df discloses root filesystem presently standing @ 502megs. guess it'll
fit in 40-gig ssd )
these deviceless filesystems worry me. created magically on boot? what's required make system magically create them on boot? if copy filesystem on ssd , redo grub config, work? web searches reveal subtleties
wrt mount points.

looks root filesystem must have /var/run , /var/lock.
apparently can't mount directly /var.
slicing , dicing ( quite enormous ) hard drives, get
/var/backups
/var/cache
/var/games
/var/lib
/var/local
/var/log
/var/mail
/var/opt
/var/spool ( biggie! )
/var/www
/var/tmp
*really* don't slicing , dicing disks fine. whole thing looking fragile , easy break down road, dire , hard troubleshoot consequences.
hindsight being 20/20, might not have been idea of ubuntu designers
create magic stuff in /var, such can't mounted root whole.
or not understanding something?
