Thread: ubuntu doesn't boot up, stuck at logo with blinking process bar
dear friends,
novice ubuntu. curious learn more it. have installed ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal edition through wubi installer alongside windows 7. wanted check out kde environment had offer differently default desktop environment gnome unity environment.
installed kde environment using sudo command given google. after using kde environment few hours, began feel, liked default gnome environment better (in classic mode) compared kde more used former.
uninstalled kde sudo command got googling. @ final step of uninstallation, admit not sure whether did right or wrong. there sth related 'daemon' popped , chose yes , kde uninstalled or atleast that's thought.
horror, when tried rebooting laptop ubuntu gnome, blue coloured kubuntu logo popping once again , had go synaptic package manager , delete sth called 'plymouth' package remove kubuntu logo.
after doing these, when tried booting ubuntu, not able gnome login screen. screen stuck ubuntu logo , process bar blinking , gnome never started.
when pressed esc key check out happening behind, see processes being checked , there [ok] after , there [fail] next "starting cpu interrupts balancing daemon". , terminal screen ended "stopping system v run level compatibility". not sure if might root cause of blocking boot-up. couldn't screenshot of intermittent terminal screens not in position type in commands such fbgrab can used grab screenshot of terminal screen.
after intense googling, figured how manually configure gnome start up. pressed cnt + alt +f1 white ubuntu logo popped , after logging in ubuntu account through terminal interface, typed in following things.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
, voila got gnome login screen. temporarily heaved sigh of relief. (by way saw flash on terminal moments before went gnome login screen "you need not init way or sth"..i couldn't catch sight of flashed few moments)
not satisfied. there might way set problem right isn't it? kindly pls throw light on issue. want gdm automatically activated during boot. big pain manually configure everytime boot. possible windows restore set ubuntu right? saw in forums mention called boot.ini botch if perform system restore in win 7.
pls me telling me method not involve uninstalling ubuntu , reinstalling it. because have done lot of tweaks, optimisations , installed lot of apps in it. not have system image backup well. nightmare these things on , on again. mistake or rather drawback side have laptop alone , not have standalone desktop experiment linux.
here how done
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnome
, if still not right, try
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
should safe, running without backup, use @ own risk. goodluck
