to you, in future, find correct forum topic please read which forum post question have put together.
joomla 3.5(lts) has not been released yet nor until @ least september 2013 , possibly march 2014.
joomla 2.5(lts) continue supported @ least until march 2014 , possibly september 2014.
at moment joomla 3.0(sts) current next step if need particular feature provides, experienced user, or developer. means have @ locally or on test site not update current public site it.

i assume custom template created you, , templates main stumbling block along other third party extensions (either availability in 3.x.x or need hand upgrading of code) core update feature directly affect joomla framework , cms.

there notes available on upgrading templates , if have skills necessary should not overwhelming testing on must done on development site , not actual live site. idea download copy of site , database , install on wamp, xampp, or mamp on local pc/mac , work there.

i suggest start here http://docs.joomla.org/index.php?search ... special%3a search , review relevant developer information.

this page identifies potential backward compatibility issues might arise:

then check out here http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... er_id=8103 see if there known issues identified.

the following page on documentation wiki converting template joomla 3 may of assistance specifically.

as thread core classes joomla 3.0
