Thread: 11.04 won't boot, live CDs malfunctioning, sda disappeared?

running ubuntu 11.04 on bit of frankenstein machine; know sure has amd64 athlon, though 11.04 install 32 bit.

when first installing 11.04 cd laggy , required several tries go through process, once installed os worked fine no problems, main drive on /dev/sda. it's been running several weeks.

today family member hit "sleep" button on keyboard, , when screen went black moved mouse around , pressed unknown number of key combinations before forcing hard reboot. (the joys of shared computers!) main install won't grub. bios screen displays, goes black blinking cursor. leave long enough , cursor displays "read error" , nothing else.

have 11.04 , 10.04.2 live cd , have been trying both of them can in , run fsck. neither of them run if try use default live cd settings; loading screen , cycle forever, either silence or lots of spinning , clicking cd. bios seems spastic deciding whether boot cd or not; will, , other times it'll bypass cd entirely go "read error" message.

tried running both cds edd=on, noapic, , acpi=off. got me live cd desktop, in both instances have no use of optical mouse, hinders me quite bit.

once in 11.04 swapped out of x tty , ran fsck. first time did got stream of error messages wound looping:

code:
end_request: i/o error, dev sda, sector 0
with "sector 0" interchanging "sector 128", 16, 64, 784, etc. quit process , restarted, , if manage in live cd don't have sda in /dev. gparted shows no devices. used bootinfo script , got this:

code:
boot info script 0.60 17 may 2011 ============================= boot info summary: =============================== ============================ drive/partition info: ============================= no valid partition table found "blkid" output: ________________________________________________________________ device uuid type label /dev/loop0 squashfs ================================ mount points: ================================= device mount_point type options /dev/loop0 /rofs squashfs (ro,noatime) /dev/sr0 /cdrom iso9660 (ro,noatime) ========= devices don't seem have corresponding hard drive: ========= no block devices found

have lost entire drive? there way recover this?

huh, tried running 11.04 edd=on , time worked, including mouse response. checked disk utility , /dev/sda showing again, too.

fsck giving errors, fdisk giving nothing, blkid giving me don't know what:

code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fsck /dev/sda1 fsck util-linux-ng 2.17.2 e2fsck 1.41.14 (22-dec-2010) fsck.ext2: attempt read block filesystem resulted in short read while trying open /dev/sda1 zero-length partition? ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo blkid /dev/loop0: type="squashfs"
dmesg shows:

code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ dmesg | grep sda1 [ 2539.708586] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679536 [ 2539.708640] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679536 [ 2539.708684] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679550 [ 2539.708718] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679550 [ 2539.708760] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 0 [ 2539.708793] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 0 [ 2539.708832] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 1 [ 2539.708871] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679551 [ 2539.708908] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679551 [ 2539.708945] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679551 [ 2569.416463] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 0 [ 2569.416470] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 1 [ 2569.416472] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 2 [ 2569.416475] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 3 [ 2569.416522] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 0 [ 2569.416570] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679551 [ 2569.416605] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 38679551 [ 2569.416699] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 0 [ 2569.416703] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 1 [ 2569.416706] buffer i/o error on device sda1, logical block 2
