Thread: Kernel crash (?) when doing tar to pbzip2 backup

<any thoughts on this, or discussions on similar problems welcome!>

using ubuntu 10.10 updated on 2 core(4 core?) intel i5 2.4 ghz.

doing backups of laptop's internal drive, partition 1, boot partition ext4, ubuntu 10.10.

running ubuntu externally on target drive in 1 partition (/dev/sdb1) , target filesystem ntfs (/dev/sdb2).

command issued in terminal: tar -c /media/sda1_volume_name | pbzip2 > /media/sdb2_volume_name/backup.tar.bz2

getting kernel panic when doing high load, full backup. if use pbzip2 compress full partition backup on laptop's hardrive external usb disk, after variable amount of time, non responsive machine, image on screen, , flashing caps lock key.

thoughts are:
-----------------
a/ bad hardrives
b/ bad cpu
c/ bad memory
d/ bad driver
e/ bad ubuntu, pbzip2 somehow?
f/ tar not liking such big files?

i've tried:
-----------------
ran bad blocks on both input , output drives
--nothing found
ran smartctl on source disk
-- says it's good, has had read read/write errors , seek errors sometime in past. values above thresholds
ran memtest+ on latop lots of passes overnight
--nothing found

going try:
-----------------
cpuburn program.
running using regular bzip2, less load.

whole thing pita, love machine , it's great 1 http://www.m-techlaptops.com/ i'd sure know problem is.

now have run long smartctl on internal hard drive (sudo smartctl -t long /dev/sda) no big problems showing up.

running badblocks on destination device (external usb), , take 20 hours 450gb drive. tried upping number of blocks @ time way above default (16384 vs 64) try , speed up, did not notice real difference.

report on that. internal drive passed using standard 'badblocks' settings.

after that, it's cpu burn. , trying same thing on machine, using different equipment, same ubuntu 10.10 installed on different external drive.
