Thread: HOWTO: Sharing Internet connection with a router via Ethernet
i trying set ubuntu machine act internet connection whole lan, via wireless router's internet port. here's how got working:
equipment:
- ubuntu 11.04 desktop ethernet port
- linksys wrt120n wireless n router
- huawei e620 usb broadband modem
- ethernet cable
hardware setup:
- huawei plugged ubuntu machine
- ethernet cable plugged ethernet port
- other end of ethernet cable plugged internet port of linksys
ubuntu setup:
- connect huawei internet
- disconnect wired connection (auto eth0) in network tray icon
- create new wired connection (edit connections... > add, enter name) , select shared other computers ipv4 settings tab.
- connect new wired connection
- note down settings connection under connection information, , dns servers huawei connection
linksys setup:
- connect computer on receiving side linksys (wired or wireless)
- open browser in computer, navigate linksys (192.168.1.1 default, user , password should both admin)
- change internet connection type static ip
- under internet ip address put number came after ubuntu machine's ip address connection (again, not ip huawei connection), guess i'm pretty clueless how works. so, ubuntu machine had ip of 10.42.43.1, , gave linksys [/i]10.42.43.2[/i]
- subnet mask should same ubuntu machine, 255.255.255.0
- default gateway should ubuntu machine's ip address, 10.42.43.1 in case.
- dns 1 (etc.) should same primary dns (etc.) used ubuntu machine in huawei connection.
- click save settings.
that's it. computers connected linksys can browse internet via huawei connection
finally, after days of trying sorts of things, have alternative buying router port usb modem. using method, i'm going try use 1st gen. eeepc router instead![]()
