Thread: Ubuntu as alternate OS on 2nd HD on Dell
i have dell 4600 winxp pro sp3 on 30gb c: drive.
have second 160 gb d: drive put ubuntu on alternative os.
have done "try" of ubuntu booting cd , seems work ok.
next want install ubuntu 11.04 on d:
@ system startup, f2, f12 option.
hit f12 , this:
boot device menu:
1. normal
2. primary master drive
3. diskette drive
4. hard disk drive c:
5. ide cd-rom device
etc.
***
choose 5 boot ubuntu cd.
drive select in future if want boot d: drive after installing ubuntu on it? don't see d: drive in boot device menu.
***
dell dimension 4600 series
pentium 4, 2.4 ghz
level 2 cache, 512 kb integrated
bios version a06
***
under drive configuration have:
diskette drive a:
sata primary drive : off
sata secondary drive : off
primary master drive: hard drive
primary slave drive: off
secondary master drive: cd-rom device
secondary slave drive: cd-rom device
ide drive udma: on
***
hard disk drive sequence:
1. system bios boot devices
2. usb device (not installed)
***
boot sequence:
1. diskette drive
2. hard disk drive c:
3. ide cd-rom drive
***
fast boot: on
os install mode: off
***
memory: 512 mb ddr sdram
memory speed: 333 mhz
system memory channel mode: dual
agp aperture: 128 mb
***
in summary:
time being, want retain winxp on c:
want boot ubuntu d: choice made @ system startup (f12)
question: if d: gets formatted file format used linux/ubuntu, there have in winxp let know not longer d: drive?
otherwise, there settings need change in order begin install of ubuntu on d: drive choice make @ f12 boot device menu in order load ubuntu d: suspect need change setting d: drive additional choice on boot device menu, unless choice "2. primary master drive" choice, doesn't make sense (yet).
apologize if rudimentary , redundant, want asap.
thanks,
mick
welcome forums.
if remember correctly trying user dell , had bios yours. assumed since boots sata have drive choice. never found it. (ended grub in mbr of windows drive). see have settings turn drive on or off may change boot settings. have have bootable drive plugged in when booting bios offer second boot choice.
old ide drives would boot primary master set jumpers on drive. bios smart enough know jump primary master continue booting.
newer drives sata have let choose drive sata drives have no jumpers. bios still ide did not have sata option seems.
can still install ubuntu new 160gb drive. sure create smaller system partition inside first 137gb bios boot limit older computers have. create 20gb / (root) partition , make rest of drive /home , swap or split /home , shared ntfs data want share windows. if use manual install choice install grub2's boot loader mbr of sdb, otherwise defaults sda. not sure if able boot or have install grub's bootloader sda also.
