Lightroom does NOT make use of new/fast hardwares!
for considering new computer here's experience....
lightroom 4 not make full use of new/fast cpus / ssds!
i’ve been frustrated lightroom speed since launch , held on “old” xeon work station 2 years…. invested in latest intel cpu , io technology , i'm disappointed how lightroom 4 not make use of it. it's noticeably sluggish 1 photo next during editing. may seem small when edits hundreds of images everyday slow me down.
see system specs @ bottom of post. don't think there's bottle neck in performance! love new setup , it's pleasure use os. i'm disapointed everytime load lightroom. (my typical lightroom edits 600-900 sraw images - edit down photos in photo mechanic 5! it's slow in lightroom)
- lightroom still take time load each image when advance 1 image next (during editing). isn’t smart enough cache 100 images in advance let say. (1:1 previews been created!)
- won’t make use of more 8gb ram. no matter how big raw working set is.
- very slow switching 1 working module another
- lightroom jpeg export won’t make use of more 25% of new intel xeon e5 series dual processors processing power 12 cores. 6-9 cores literally taking nap during export!
i’ve tried found in adobe suggestion link below:
http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/optimize-performance-lightroom.html
* definately tried 1:1 render preview , of other jazz found in link directly above!
* running latest firmwares , updates
i hope next version of lightroom make use of hardware instead of adding on more features. desperately need snappy/responsive lightroom sake of productivity! i'm not here put down adobe. i'm big fan of adobe , intel , have been using them 15 years.

can copy feature request forum can vote on please? http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family , post link here can find it. it'll vote.
there couple of others might vote on too, such using embedded preview editing down. http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_capability_to_display_embe dded_preview
in terms of workarounds now, if haven't tried 4.2rc yet, might find module switching bit faster. , better use of exports processing power, try splitting export 3 or 4 , running them concurrently (i.e. set first going, , set second going, etc.) that'll make better use of cores if hard drives able keep them.
