Thread: Hard drive not being seen

i posted on techsupportforums have been doing in windows, have ubuntu 11.04 installed on laptop, maybe there in linux can me recover hard drive.

last few days computer has been behaving pretty badly. media players locking on files know can play, sound disappeared today while watching youtube video, shockwave stopped working, having close things task manager, , problem shutting down. when shut down gets spinning circle telling me "shutting down", can't seem accomplish mission, have hard restart. external hdd, subject of thread, started blinking tonight, nothing else. last few days when wake computer after using sleep button on keyboard (this new, got keyboard , tried out , worked started using it), it's been giving me message not recognizing device plugged usb port.

so, decided reinstall windows, , start fresh, external hard drive has on it, , when mean it, programs reinstall, music, family movies, , pictures (these important things), collection of documents on years, don't want lose

3 1tb drives (internal)
1 1.5tb drive (internal)
jmicron drives installed
oem intel drivers
ati catalyst 11.5
lacie 250gb external hdd (a) single drive (this 1 trying rescue)
lacie 500gb external hdd (b) 2 drives

far have removed drive enclosure (a), , installed external enclosure (b). when turn 1 on, 1 stayed in can opened, disk trying save pops "you need format disk in drive m: before can use it. want format it?" message, cancel. when try disk in enclosure (b) nothing happens, when have jumpers set master, nothing happens whether it's disk or not.

disk took out of enclosure (b) using, when put in enclosure (a) disk i'm trying save came nothing happens, no matter jumper settings. guessing original problem controller enclosure (a), appears disk still functional.

there can access hdd can copy @ least pictures? linux not picky?

sorry rambling, tried explain best can, yet brief.

above, have used bytecc superspeed usb 3.0 ide/sata usb adapter both known hdd, , drive trying recover. known works fine, 1 operating on doesn't anything. drive spin up, there's no output.

edit: ok, in case ever happens anyone, don't forget replace jumpers on hdd. had set master though alone on adapter. still doesn't work in external enclosure though, @ least can burn important stuff discs.

this bad thing filesystem on drive, if feel "have to". whenever find in situation, use alt-sysrq "r s e u b" (the so-called "magic sysrq" shutdown method).

ok, on problem. drive connected computer via usb? if so, might try unplugging it, booting linux system (could live cd, example), plug in usb connector. should trigger "device notifier". if not work, after few seconds, run "fdisk -lu" in terminal , see whether drive listed.

external drive have conventional sata or ide connector on it? if usb connection doesn't work, might need connect drive directly motherboard have "seen" computer.
