"Placing" linked PDF File in Illustrator for Markup Edits?

when highlight text in pdf file linked illustrator file (pdf "placed" in illustrator file linked object), text highlights in pdf file not show in illustrator when update link.  know why, or there setting or workaround force pdf markups show in illustrator?

i use illustrator pdf editor because more flexible acrobat's clunky editing tools.  there significant problems however.  if open pdf page in illustrator, lose stuff paragraph formatting, illustrator wants left justify (same problem when opening autocad file in illustrator).  can have trouble missing fonts helvetica, isn't default system font because licensed , expensive.  illustrator swap missing font out substitute can edit text.  (acrobat same thing if try edit font isn't loaded in system).

 

a workaround maintain exact registration if want mark pdf file (rather changing text) "place" pdf file in illustrator.  when placed, file behaves object isn't editable in illustrator (you can edit placed object illustrator, illustrator use authoring application edits, in case, acrobat).  interested doing same thing,... when use illustrator mark file psd, jpg or pdf, open file in illustrator capture dimensions, , delete everything, , "place" file illustrator.  can optionally link or embed placed object.  after placing, use transform tool move placed object's upper left corner 0,0 (xy coordinates) acquire registration, lock layer, , markups on separate layers.

 

this procedure bit clunky , requires multiple construction files illustrator's vector tools better of markup tools (but not all) in photoshop or acrobat.  photoshop file link illustrator, , can export photoshop, illustrator construction file not "linked" photoshop, if need make changes illustrator have couple of options.  can open illustrator smart object photoshop (photoshop launch illustrator edits), or can delete smart object , work on illustrator construction file directly , re-import.

 

since can't select text of placed pdf file object in illustrator highlight text, i'd of text highlighting in linked acrobat file upstream of illustrator.  should able bounce , forth both files open, illustrator construction file , linked pdf file.  problem when add highlight pdf file, not show in illustrator placed object linked pdf file.

 

so original question.  know why pdf text highlights not show in illustrator when pdf file placed object in illustrator?  there workaround force pdf text highlights display in illustrator?

 

fyi, working on business presentation , need mark few pages of irs publication 463, 58 page pdf document bunch of "destination" links (10 20 links per page).  can extract page, markup edits, , "replace" page original acrobat file , links , bookmarks still work, registration critical.

 

i'm using cs6

pdf markup/ comments metadata , rendered live inside reader/ acrobat. that's why e.g. callouts differently between different versions. or iow: there's no graphical objects @ ai render , i'm not aware of way enforce them render graphics data other exporting whole page graphic acrobat.
